In Memorium: Honoring our Co-founder Frank Hurley

Dr. Frank Hurley was an esteemed colleague, friend, and mentor. His valuable counsel and wisdom is greatly missed by RRD and our partner companies. Frank possessed a rare combination of qualities that were endearing to all those who had the privilege of knowing him. A great role model, Frank was exceptionally smart, authentic, humble, and always genuinely more concerned about others than himself. Frank was tremendously devoted to his wife, their three children, John, Catharine and Clare, as well as his friends.

Frank was recognized for his expertise in clinical trial design and analysis, and in directing regulatory, research, and product development strategies for pharmaceuticals, biologics, and medical devices. He received his PhD in Biostatistics from Johns Hopkins University and a BS in Mathematics and Pre-Medical Sciences from Georgetown University. He co-founded BRI International, Inc. in 1971 and guided its growth as both Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer until he merged the company with Quintiles Transnational, Inc. in 1996. He served as Chief Scientific Officer of Quintiles until 2001, and as a member of the senior leadership team, oversaw the growth of Quintiles from 2,500 employees to greater than 20,000. In 2002, Frank co-founded RRD, serving as the Company’s Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer.

Over a career that spanned more than forty years, Frank made invaluable contributions to the development and approval of hundreds of biopharmaceutical products and medical devices. His commitment to improving healthcare went far beyond his day job. Frank was very committed to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health having served as Chairman of the Health Advisory Board since 2012, a member of the Dean’s Alumni Advisory Council and on the University Board of Trustees since 2007. For his outstanding commitment and service over an extended period, Frank received the Alumni Heritage Award in 2014.

One of Frank’s most memorable sayings was “if you don’t know where you’re going, any path will get you there”.

“This became one of our fundamental principles when we founded RRD”, said Dr. Chuck Finn, CEO and Co-Founder of RRD with Dr. Hurley. “Frank believed that for any product development program to have the best chance of success, one must spend considerable effort upfront carefully thinking through and planning for the myriad of possibilities, complexities, and challenges to arrive at the best development path possible. This approach has served RRD and our partners well for many years.  No one will ever fill the void left by Frank and he will be greatly missed.  He has enriched our lives beyond measure, and his wisdom, guidance, and spirit will live on through the many people he has touched and through RRD”.
